I was given “The Alchemist” as a gift from a soul that dwells by the side of my soul in the very depths of our hearts, yet we are still lost amongst the swirling winds of life.

Ironically, Paulo Coelho tells the story of a young shepherd boy named Santiago who, believing a recurring dream to be prophetic, travels far across foreign lands and beyond the expanses of his mind in search for a promised treasure at the Egyptian pyramids. An old king tells Santiago that “when you really want something to happen, the whole universe will conspire so that your wish comes true”. Does he find his treasure or was the journey all in vain?

This is a timeless, magical and thought-provoking read, which had me spellbound from cover to cover. The countless times that I have read this fable, and the countless hands that it has been passed on to. Travelling the world is not just an exploration and discovery of places but of the mind, body, and soul. I ponder on the suggestion that every journey is a pilgrimage, a spiritual awakening.
